What final expense is

A small whole life policy built for one job.

It covers the funeral, burial or cremation, and the bills that land in the first weeks. The benefit is paid in cash to the person you name.

What you're looking at

  • A small whole life policy, usually $5,000 to $25,000
  • Designed to cover funeral costs, burial or cremation, and whatever else the family needs
  • Many of these products are level-premium whole life policies, meaning the premium is designed to stay the same for life as long as required premiums are paid
  • Depending on the product and applicant, underwriting may involve health questions without a medical exam. Issuance is not guaranteed unless a product is specifically identified as guaranteed issue
  • Pays a cash benefit directly to the person you name. They use it how they need to.
  • Timing varies by carrier and product. Some applications are decided quickly; others take longer depending on underwriting
What it costs without a plan

Do you know what a funeral runs now?

Rising

Funeral costs have increased consistently year over year. What costs $10,000 today will cost more in five years.

Most families don't have that set aside, and the bills don't wait. A policy gives your loved ones money to help cover the immediate costs, so they can spend those days grieving instead of scrambling to pay.

Why now

The rate you lock in today is the rate you keep.

Final expense premiums are based largely on your age and health when you apply. Waiting usually means higher costs, and changes in your health could limit the options available later.

With a level-premium whole life policy, the premium is designed to stay the same for life as long as required premiums are paid, and the coverage is designed to stay in force. The payment stays the same whether you're 62 or 82.

Worth a look if

  • You're 50 or older and haven't set anything aside for end-of-life costs
  • You don't want your children or grandchildren to have to figure out how to pay for your funeral
  • You've been declined for term or whole life coverage because of your health
  • You want a fixed payment that doesn't change and coverage that doesn't expire
Before you call

Questions people ask.

Is there a waiting period before coverage kicks in?

Sometimes, yes. Some final expense policies have a graded benefit period, usually the first two years. If you pass away during that window from natural causes, your beneficiary typically receives a return of premiums plus interest rather than the full death benefit. After the graded period, full coverage applies. Not every policy has this, it depends on your health and the carrier. I'll tell you upfront which type you're looking at before you sign anything.

I was declined for life insurance before. Does that rule me out?

Usually not. Final expense uses simplified underwriting. A few health questions, no medical exam, no waiting weeks. Many health conditions may still be eligible, depending on the carrier and how the policy is underwritten. Being told no somewhere else doesn't automatically mean no here. I find out what's available for your specific situation when we talk.

What does this cost per month?

Depends on your age, health, and how much coverage you want. I can't quote you without knowing those things. What I can say is most people are surprised by what it costs, especially when they think about what their family would have to come up with on their own. I'll bring real quotes to our call, not ballpark numbers.
